Ceramic Coating & PPF Guide: Get It Done
How to Choose a Ceramic Coating or PPF Installer in the Upstate
A ceramic coating or paint protection film is only as good as the person who puts it on. The same bottle of coating or roll of film can look excellent on one car and patchy on another, and the difference is almost entirely prep, conditions and care during the install.
You can judge most of that before you hand over the keys. This guide covers what to watch for at the first visit, what the work area tells you, what should be in writing, and the offers that should make you walk away. It applies to any installer you consider in Anderson, Greenville, Easley, Clemson or anywhere else, us included.
The short answer
Choose an installer who inspects your car before quoting a final price, explains what polishing can and can't remove, names the exact coating or film and its maker, and puts the scope and price in writing. Look for a clean indoor work area with strong lighting, out of direct sun. Walk away from no-prep offers, vague product names, and promises that a coating is permanent or stops rock chips.
Key points
- A real quote comes after someone has looked at your paint; a phone price is a starting point, not a final number.
- The installer should name the product and its manufacturer, and any warranty terms should come from the maker's own document.
- Coating needs shade, a cool surface and good light; IGL's Kenzo data sheet rules out direct sun and hot panels.
- For film, check whether the shop is an authorized installer for the brand; the film maker's dealer locator can confirm it.
- Be wary of promises: no coating is permanent, and no coating stops rock chips.
First visit
The inspection tells you most of what you need
A good installer wants to see the car before committing to a final price. Paint condition sets how much correction it needs, and correction is often the biggest part of the labor in a coating job. An installer who quotes a final number for a coating without seeing the paint either plans to skip the correction or plans to change the price later.
Watch what happens during the inspection. Is the paint looked at under strong light or a handheld inspection light, not just glanced at in the parking lot? Does the installer point out specific defects and say which ones polishing can remove and which ones it can't, like a scratch that catches a fingernail or a chip down to primer? Honest limits are a good sign. Promising to remove everything is not.
- They ask how you drive, where you park and how you wash the car.
- They show you defects on your own paint rather than speaking in general terms.
- They explain the difference between an enhancement and a correction and which one your car needs.
- They ask about repaints and previous coatings or film.
- They mention the limits: coatings do not stop chips, film does not hide existing damage.
The work area
What the bay says about the result
Ceramic coating and film are both sensitive to where they are applied. IGL's technical data sheet for Kenzo says not to apply in direct sunlight or on a hot surface, and gives a working temperature range of 41 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, ideally about 68 to 79. In an Upstate summer, that means an indoor bay, not a driveway. Dust and pollen landing on wet coating or under film show up as specks, so a clean, enclosed space matters for both.
Lighting matters as much as cleanliness. Coating residue that is not fully leveled leaves high spots, dark smears that are easy to miss in dim light and obvious in the sun. Correction work needs bright, color-accurate light to see swirls. Ask to see the area where the work happens, or at least ask how it is lit and kept clean.
Products
Named products, real manufacturers
You should be able to find out exactly what goes on your car. That means the brand and product name of the coating, how many layers, and which surfaces get which product, and for film, the brand and film line. Then you can look up the manufacturer's own data sheet and care instructions instead of relying on a sales description.
For film, check the manufacturer's dealer locator. LLumar, for example, points buyers to its dealer locator to find authorized installers and notes that pricing is set by the dealers who install its film, since their labor is part of the cost. A shop that claims to install a brand but is not on its list may not be able to register a manufacturer's warranty for you.
- Coating product name
- Ask for the exact name, not just "ceramic" or "graphene." Look up its rated durability and care instructions from the maker. Our three IGL coatings compared
- Film brand and line
- Ask which film, which finish and whether it is cut from patterns or bulk. Ask how edges are finished on each panel. How to compare PPF films
- Warranty source
- Warranty terms for the product come from the manufacturer's document. Ask for it and read the exclusions and care requirements. PPF warranties explained
In writing
The quote and the paperwork
AAA's advice for auto repair carries over well to coatings and film: get a written estimate that describes the specific work, lists all costs and says the amount will not be exceeded without your approval. A written estimate is effectively your contract with the shop. If a description is vague, ask for it to be clarified before you agree.
For a coating, the written scope should show the prep level (wash and decontamination, enhancement or correction stage), the coating product and the surfaces included. For film, it should show the exact panels covered, the film line and finish. Keep everything you receive at pickup, including care instructions.
Scope
Which services, which panels, which surfaces. "Full front" means different things at different shops.
Product
Coating or film brand and product name, plus any add-ons such as glass, wheels or trim.
Price
Starting price versus final price, and when the final price is confirmed.
Policies
Deposit, cancellation terms and drop-off arrangements, in writing before you commit.
After the job
Care instructions and any manufacturer warranty paperwork or registration.
Red flags
Offers to walk away from
- "Lifetime" or "permanent" coating claims. Coatings wear; rated years assume proper maintenance.
- Claims that a coating stops rock chips or scratches. It does not; that is what film is for.
- A coating price with no mention of a wash, decontamination or polishing stage.
- A "ceramic" job that is a spray product applied in minutes, sold at coating prices.
- No product name, or a house brand with no data sheet or manufacturer behind it.
- No inspection before the final price, or pressure to book today.
- Coating outdoors in direct sun or on a hot panel.
- A promise that every scratch will come out.
Our answers
How we answer those questions
Since this is our guide, here is how The Auto Show answers the same checklist, using only what we publish. We use IGL coatings: Kenzo for our 5-year option, Quartz+ for 3-year and EZ for 1-year, where the years are each product's rated durability with proper maintenance. We install LLumar Platinum PPF and are authorized LLumar installers.
We work by appointment, inspect the car, and confirm the final price after inspection; published prices are starting prices. A Level 2 detail is our minimum before a coating, and the paint must be corrected or enhanced first. We show you what can and cannot be removed at inspection. Any warranty terms come from IGL or LLumar, and care instructions are given at pickup.
| Ask | A good answer sounds like | A warning sign sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| What prep is included? | A specific wash, decon and polishing stage matched to your paint | "We just wash it and coat it" |
| Which product exactly? | Brand, product name, layers, surfaces | "Our own ceramic" with no data sheet |
| Will my scratches come out? | Shows which ones will, which won't, and why | "Everything comes out" |
| How long will it last? | Rated years with conditions and care | "Forever," or any lifetime claim |
| Who backs the warranty? | The manufacturer's document, with exclusions | A verbal promise |
| Where is it applied? | Indoors, out of sun, good lighting | Outside, in the driveway |

Common questions
Should I get more than one quote for a ceramic coating?
It is reasonable, especially for a large job. Compare the scope, not just the price: prep stages, product name, surfaces included and how the final price is set. Two quotes with the same number can describe very different work, and a lower quote often has less correction in it.
How can I tell if an installer is authorized for a film brand?
Use the film manufacturer's dealer locator. LLumar, for example, directs buyers to its locator to find dealers who install its film. You can also ask the shop for its dealer status and how it registers any manufacturer warranty after install.
Is a more expensive coating job always better?
Not automatically. The price should be explained by things you can see in the quote: how much correction, which product, how many surfaces, and the size of the vehicle. A high price with vague scope is no better than a low price with vague scope. Ask what the money buys.
What should I check when I pick up my car?
Look at the paint in daylight at a low angle for high spots, smears or missed areas, and check the defects you discussed at inspection. For film, look along every edge for lifting and debris. Ask for product details and care instructions in writing before you leave.
