Boat Detailing Guide: Understand
How to Clean a Non-Skid Boat Deck
Non-skid is the textured pattern molded into the deck, gunwales and steps of a fiberglass boat. Its job is grip, wet or dry, in bare feet or boat shoes. The same texture that gives grip gives dirt a place to hide: clay, sunscreen, fish blood and mildew settle into the valleys of the pattern, where a sponge glides right over them.
Cleaning it well takes a different approach from the smooth gelcoat on the hull. This guide covers the tools, the method, the stains that matter on Upstate lakes and the one mistake that turns a safe deck into a slippery one.
The short answer
Clean a non-skid deck by rinsing off loose grit, scrubbing with a medium to stiff deck brush and a mild boat soap, working in sections, and rinsing thoroughly so no soap film is left. Treat stains and mildew with a cleaner made for non-skid, using diluted bleach only sparingly and rinsing well. Do not wax or polish walking surfaces: Grady-White warns they will become slippery.
Key points
- Non-skid is textured gelcoat; dirt sits in the low points of the pattern, so it needs a brush, not a sponge.
- Grady-White's manual says to use a sponge on smooth surfaces and a brush on the non-skid.
- Never wax surfaces that will be walked on; builders and Discover Boating both warn it makes non-skid slippery.
- Avoid caustic, highly alkaline and ammonia cleaners, which Grady-White says can darken gelcoat.
- Rinse thoroughly: soap residue left in the texture is slippery and attracts new dirt.
The surface
What Non-Skid Is and Why It Gets So Dirty
On most fiberglass boats, non-skid is part of the gelcoat: the mold has a textured pattern, so the finished deck comes out with raised peaks and recessed valleys. Grady-White's owner's manual describes gelcoat as a thin layer of pigmented resin with microscopic pores that allow surface discoloration if it is not kept clean. On non-skid, those pores sit on a surface with far more area than a smooth panel.
Feet do the rest. Every trip down a ramp brings grit and, in the Upstate, red clay whose color comes from iron oxides. Add sunscreen from bare feet, drink spills, fish slime and pollen, and the valleys of the pattern fill with a gray, sticky film that a quick hose-off never reaches.
Horizontal surfaces also take the most sun. That makes deck gelcoat one of the first places to chalk and fade, and a chalky surface holds stains even more readily.
Tools
Brushes and Cleaners That Work
- Deck brushMedium to stiff bristles
- A brush with bristles stiff enough to reach into the pattern, on a long handle so you can put your weight behind it. Start medium; go stiffer only on aggressive textures and heavy soil.
- Detail brushFor edges and corners
- A hand brush or old toothbrush for corners, scuppers, around hardware and where the non-skid meets smooth gelcoat.
- Mild boat soapEveryday cleaner
- Grady-White recommends a mild detergent and plenty of fresh water for routine gelcoat cleaning. A dedicated boat soap rinses cleaner than most household products. How to wash a boat
- Non-skid deck cleanerFor stains and mildew
- Sea Ray's cleaning advice points to a foaming deck cleaner that gets into the uneven spaces of non-skid to tackle mildew. Look for products labeled safe for gelcoat and non-skid.
The method
Cleaning Non-Skid, Step by Step
Clear the deck and rinse
Remove mats, cushions and gear. Rinse with a hose to float off loose sand and clay, working from the bow and higher surfaces down toward the drains.
Work in sections you can keep wet
Soap that dries in the sun on a hot deck leaves residue. Do a section a few feet square at a time, and on summer days work in shade or early in the morning.
Scrub in two directions
Apply soapy water and scrub with the deck brush, first one way and then across, so the bristles reach every side of the raised pattern. Let the brush do the work; heavy force mostly bends bristles.
Detail the edges
Use the hand brush along the edges of the non-skid, around cleats, hatches and drains, where dirt collects and the long brush cannot reach.
Rinse until the water runs clear
Grady-White's instruction is to rinse away all grime and residue. Soap left in the texture feels slick underfoot and grabs dirt on the next trip.
Check it wet and dry
Look at the deck while wet, then again dry. Gray shadows in the pattern after drying mean soil is still in the valleys; repeat that section rather than scrubbing the whole boat harder.
No wax
Why You Should Never Wax Non-Skid
Grady-White's owner's manual puts it in capitals: do not wax surfaces that may be walked on; they will become slippery. Discover Boating says the same, noting that wax defeats the purpose of a non-skid surface. Polish and cleaner wax products fill the texture and leave a film, and a slippery deck on a moving boat is a safety problem, not a cosmetic one.
Discover Boating points instead to polymer-based protectants made specifically for non-skid, which are designed to protect the surface without making it slippery. If you use one, read the label for non-skid use, apply it exactly as directed, and test the grip with wet feet before anyone else walks on it.
When waxing the rest of the boat, mask or carefully avoid the non-skid. Wax that strays onto the texture is hard to remove and leaves white residue in the pattern.
Stains
Stains, Mildew and Clay in the Texture
- Red clay and orange stains: rinse and scrub while fresh; iron-based orange that remains often responds to an oxalic acid stain cleaner made for gelcoat, applied to the stain only and rinsed thoroughly.
- Black mildew specks: use a non-skid or mildew cleaner made for gelcoat. Discover Boating notes bleach is harsh on fiberglass surfaces, so if you use diluted bleach, use it sparingly and rinse well.
- Fish blood and slime: rinse with cool water quickly, then wash; protein stains set with heat and time.
- Sunscreen film: mild soap and a brush; sunscreen can also react with iron and turn orange over time.
- Scuffs and black marks from shoes: a dedicated scuff remover or gentle detail brush; keep aggressive pads off the surrounding smooth gelcoat.
- Rust spots near hardware: find the source, usually a non-stainless fastener or an anchor, or the stain returns.
Avoid
Mistakes That Damage Non-Skid
- Wax, polish or cleaner wax on walking surfaces.
- Caustic, highly alkaline or ammonia cleaners, which Grady-White says may darken gelcoat.
- Letting bleach or acid cleaners run onto vinyl seats, foam decking, carpet, canvas or metal trim.
- Scouring powders and heavy abrasive pads used routinely; they wear down the peaks of the pattern and the gelcoat with them.
- Machine polishing or compounding the texture; abrasives round off the pattern and reduce grip.
- Letting cleaners dry on a hot deck before rinsing.
- Rinsing bleach or acid runoff into the lake; clean on a trailer away from the shoreline when using strong products, as Sunbrella advises for bleach.
Honest limits
When Non-Skid Is Worn, Not Dirty
If the deck stays gray and chalky after a good scrub, or the pattern feels smooth and polished in the main walking paths, the gelcoat itself is weathered or worn. Cleaning cannot add back texture or pigment. Oxidized non-skid cannot simply be buffed like smooth gelcoat, because buffing flattens the very peaks that give grip.
Restoring badly worn non-skid, recoating it or adding a new textured surface is refinishing work and a separate trade from detailing. Cracks radiating from hardware or soft spots underfoot are structural questions for a marine repair shop.
Deck Looking Gray No Matter What?
As part of a boat detail, The Auto Show scrubs non-skid clean rather than polishing it, so it keeps its grip. Tell us your make, model and what the deck looks like, and we quote your boat individually.
Common questions
Can I pressure wash a non-skid deck?
Published builder care instructions, such as Grady-White's, call for a hose, soap and a brush, not a pressure washer. High pressure can force water around hardware and seams, strip protectant and blast dirt onto nearby vinyl and canvas. If you use one, keep it on a low setting with a wide fan tip, at a distance, and never aim it at seams, hardware or upholstery.
What brush is best for non-skid?
A medium to stiff deck brush on a long handle handles most decks. The bristles need to reach into the low points of the pattern without being so harsh that they scratch the surrounding smooth gelcoat. Keep a separate hand brush for edges and corners, and use softer brushes on smooth areas, as Grady-White recommends.
How do I make an old non-skid deck white again?
First get it truly clean with a non-skid cleaner and brush, then treat stains individually: oxalic acid stain cleaners for orange iron stains and an approved mildew cleaner for black specks. If it stays gray and chalky, the gelcoat is weathered, and that needs refinishing rather than cleaning.
Is there a protectant I can use on non-skid?
Yes, there are protectants formulated specifically for non-skid that aim to add UV protection without making the surface slippery. Use only products labeled for non-skid, follow the directions, and test grip with wet feet afterward. Regular wax and polish do not belong on walking surfaces.
