Window Tint Guide: Compare
Window Tint and Glass Coating: Do They Work Together?
Window tint and glass coating both get described as protecting your windows, so people often assume they are two versions of the same thing, or that one will interfere with the other. Neither is true. They sit on opposite sides of the glass and solve different problems.
This guide explains what each product does, why they combine without trouble, which one makes sense on the windshield in South Carolina, and how to clean glass that has film on the inside and a coating on the outside.
The short answer
Yes, they work well together because they sit on opposite sides of the glass. Window tint is a film applied to the inside surface that reduces heat, glare and UV. A glass coating is a thin, clear layer bonded to the outside surface that makes water bead and run off. Tint helps on sunny days; a coating helps in rain. Neither affects the other.
Key points
- Tint film is installed on the interior side of the glass; a glass coating is applied to the exterior side.
- Tint is about sun: heat, glare, UV and privacy. A glass coating is about water: rain beading, fewer wipes and easier cleaning.
- In South Carolina, film is only allowed on the windshield above the AS-1 line, so a coating is the usual windshield upgrade.
- At The Auto Show, IGL Ecocoat Window is $100 for the windshield or $250 to $350 for all windows, and lasts about 20,000 miles.
- Clean both with a non-abrasive glass cleaner and soft cloths; keep abrasive glass polish away from the film side.
Two sides
Inside Film, Outside Coating
Automotive tint goes on the inside. LLumar's FAQ says auto window tint is typically applied to the interior glass surfaces of a vehicle, and the International Window Film Association describes installation as applying film to the interior side of the vehicle's windows. Being inside protects the film from wipers, weather and car washes.
A glass coating goes on the outside, where the rain is. IGL describes its Ecocoat Window as a two-component glass coating that creates a hydrophobic layer that repels water, reduces how often you need the wipers and reduces water spots. It bonds to the glass itself, which is why the outside surface has to be deep-cleaned first.
Because they sit on different surfaces, a coating does not touch the film and the film does not touch the coating. You can add either one first, or both at once, without one weakening the other.
Jobs
What Each One Actually Does
- Window tintInside surface
- Reduces solar heat, glare and UV through the glass and adds privacy. LLumar rates its films to block up to 99% of UV rays. Regulated by South Carolina law: nonreflective, no red, yellow or amber, 27% combined light transmission on most side and rear windows, and a compliance sticker on each tinted window. - Glass coatingOutside surface
- A clear, water-repellent layer. Rain beads up and, at highway speed, blows off the windshield. It also makes bugs and road film easier to clean off. It does not darken the glass, block heat or stop chips and cracks. How a windshield glass coating works
Windshield
The Windshield: Coating Yes, Film Only Up Top
The windshield is where the two products part ways in South Carolina. S.C. Code Ann. § 56-5-5015 says a sunscreening device may be used only along the top of the windshield and may not extend downward beyond the AS1 line, and that if the AS1 line is not visible, no film may be applied to the windshield. So tint on the windshield is limited to a strip along the top.
A glass coating is a different kind of product. It is clear, it is not a tint, and it is sold to make water run off, not to reduce the sun. That makes it the windshield upgrade most drivers here can actually use, and it is the one surface where a coating does the most good, because the windshield takes the most rain at speed.
IGL also notes that new windshields often come with a factory hydrophobic treatment that wears off over time with wipers and weather. A coating restores and extends that water-shedding behavior.

Side glass
Coating Side Windows That Already Have Tint
Side windows benefit from a coating too, especially on a wet drive. Water on the outside of the front side windows makes it harder to see the mirrors, and a coated side window sheds it more readily. That matters a little more on tinted glass, because tint already reduces the light coming through, and a film of water on the outside makes the view murkier still at night.
The coating goes on the outside of a side window, the tint stays on the inside, and the two never meet. What you should not do is put a glass coating on the film itself. Window film has its own scratch-resistant top layer, and glass coating prep involves cleaners and polishes meant for glass, not for film.
Order
Doing Both: Order and Timing
Decide which windows get what
A common setup is film on the side and rear windows, a strip above the AS-1 line if you want one, and a glass coating on the windshield. Some owners coat all the glass for easier cleaning.
Book them together or separately
Because they use opposite surfaces, either order works. Booking both at once saves a trip. Ask us how timing works for your car when you book.
Respect the tint's cure
Keep tinted windows rolled up and avoid cleaning the inside of the glass until the installer says the film has set. The outside coated surface is not affected by that wait.
Plan for the coating to wear
IGL says Ecocoat Window keeps the windshield clearer for up to a year; our guideline is about 20,000 miles. Wiper strokes wear it, so high-mileage commuters will reach the end sooner.
Cleaning
How to Clean Glass With Both
- Inside (film side): use a soft cloth and a non-abrasive glass cleaner. The International Window Film Association says any normal glass cleaning solution with no abrasive materials is fine, and LLumar says its tint needs no special products.
- Outside (coated side): a gentle glass cleaner and a clean microfiber keep the coating slick. Skip abrasive glass polishes, which can strip a coating.
- Wipers: keep the blades clean and replace worn ones. Worn blades are a common cause of streaks on coated glass.
- Never use a razor blade or scraper on the inside of tinted glass; it can cut the film.
- Use separate cloths for inside and outside so grit from the outside does not end up scratching the film.
Cost
What Each Costs Here
At The Auto Show, tint starts at $125.99 for LLumar Carbon or $199.99 for LLumar Ceramic on the two front side windows, with full-vehicle coverage by quote. The IGL Ecocoat Window glass coating is $100 for the windshield or $250 to $350 for all windows, and lasts about 20,000 miles.
If you are working to a budget, think about what bothers you most. Hot afternoons and glare point to tint first. Night rain on the interstate points to a windshield coating first. Many drivers end up with both because they cover different weather.

Common questions
Can you put a glass coating on tinted windows?
Yes, on the outside of the glass. Tint film sits on the inside surface, so a coating applied to the outside never touches it. The coating should not be applied to the film itself, which has its own scratch-resistant top layer and is not designed to be prepped or coated like bare glass.
Does a glass coating make tinted windows look darker?
No. A glass coating is clear and does not change how much light passes through in any way you would notice. Your tinted windows will look the same, but rain will bead and run off the outside instead of sheeting across it, which can make the view through tinted glass clearer in wet weather.
Is a windshield glass coating legal in South Carolina?
South Carolina's tint statute limits film on the windshield to the area above the AS-1 line. A glass coating is a clear water-repellent layer, not a tint film, and it is not sold to reduce the sun. If you want a legal improvement to the windshield, a coating is the common choice here.
Which should I get first, tint or a glass coating?
Start with whatever bothers you most. If heat and glare on summer drives are the problem, tint first. If you do a lot of driving in the rain or at night, a windshield coating at $100 is a small, noticeable upgrade. They don't affect each other, so you can add the second one any time.
