Ceramic Coating & PPF Guide: Understand
What Not to Do in the First Two Weeks After a Ceramic Coating
You just picked up a freshly coated car. It looks better than it has in years, water beads off it like it is afraid of the paint, and you have probably been handed a list of things not to do. Some of those rules matter a lot. Others are cautious habits that are worth keeping anyway.
This guide separates the two. It uses IGL's published data for its coatings to explain what is happening in the first days, then covers the mistakes that actually cause trouble: washing too soon or too hard, chemicals, bird droppings left to bake and parking in the wrong spot.
The short answer
For the first two weeks after a ceramic coating, avoid washing with soap for at least the full cure period (IGL lists 3 to 5 days), skip automatic car washes, keep harsh cleaners, waxes and quick detailers off the paint unless your installer approves them, and remove bird droppings, sap and water spots promptly with a gentle rinse. Light rain is usually fine after the first hours; blot it dry if you can.
Key points
- IGL's data sheets say its Kenzo, Quartz and EZ coatings fully cure in 3 to 5 days.
- During that cure, IGL says not to use harsh shampoos, all-purpose cleaners or anything containing caustic soda, but plain water is fine if the car needs cleaning.
- The first few hours matter most for water: IGL's sheets call for about 1 to 4 hours of air drying away from water, depending on the product, which normally happens before pickup.
- Two weeks is a conservative installer rule, not IGL's cure number; it gives a margin before automatic washes, toppers and heavier chemicals.
- If you also had film installed, LLumar asks for no washing at all for three days.
What is happening
What the coating is doing in the first days
A ceramic coating goes on as a liquid and becomes a hard film as it reacts with moisture in the air and crosslinks. It is touch-dry and showing water beading within hours, but it is still hardening and settling into its final chemical resistance for days after that.
IGL's technical data sheets put numbers on it. For Ecocoat Kenzo, the sheet calls for air drying about 4 hours away from water after the top layer, and a full cure in 3 to 5 days. For Ecocoat Quartz the initial air-dry window is about 2 hours, and for Ecocoat EZ about 1 hour, both also listing a full cure of 3 to 5 days. Temperature and humidity shift those timelines, which is why installers often build in extra margin.
In practice, the first critical hours are usually spent at the shop. By the time you drive away, the coating is past the stage where a sprinkle would ruin it. What is left is the full cure, and the habits that protect it.
Mistake 1
Washing too soon, or with the wrong soap
IGL's sheets are specific: during the full cure, do not wash with harsh shampoos, all-purpose cleaners or any product containing caustic soda, because that will damage the hydrophobic properties. If cleaning is necessary, the surface may be washed with just normal water.
So the safe rule for the first week is a gentle rinse only if the car needs it, followed by careful drying. Hold off on soap until the cure period has passed and your installer's instructions say you are clear. For the first real wash, use a pH-neutral car shampoo and a clean mitt, and take your time.
Mistake 2
Automatic car washes
Brush and soft-cloth washes are hard on any paint, coated or not. Touchless washes avoid the brushes but rely on strong pre-soaks that can fall outside the pH 3 to 9 range IGL specifies for cleaning its coatings. On a coating that has not fully cured, that is exactly the kind of product the data sheet warns about.
Give the coating at least the full two weeks before any automatic wash, and keep hand washing as the routine after that. If you are on a road trip and the car is covered in bugs, a plain-water rinse at a self-serve bay, held well back from the paint, is the safer option.
Mistake 3
Adding products on top too early
It is tempting to add a spray wax or ceramic detailer to make the new coating even glossier. During the cure, anything you wipe onto the surface can interfere with how the top layer settles, and some products leave films that change how the coating behaves.
The exception is a specific pairing approved by the maker and your installer. IGL's sheets for Quartz and EZ say its own spray sealant can be applied over those coatings to help prevent water spots during the 3 to 5 day cure. That is a deliberate step, not a license to try any spray. Ask before you add anything.
Mistake 4
Leaving bird droppings, sap and water spots
A curing coating is more vulnerable to marking than a fully cured one, and the usual paint hazards do not take a break. Mazda's owner's manual explains that bird droppings contain acids that can eat into clear coat if not removed, that tree sap hardens and bonds to the finish, and that minerals in rain and tap water concentrate into white rings as the water evaporates.
The fix is fast, gentle removal. For a dropping, soak it with plain water and a soft microfiber for a minute, then lift it off without rubbing. For water spots after rain or sprinklers, blot the car dry with a clean towel. Hard rubbing on a fresh coating creates its own marks.
Mistake 5
Parking in the wrong place
- Under pines, oaks or maples that drop sap, pollen or berries. In an Upstate spring, a single afternoon under a pine can leave a yellow film.
- Next to lawn sprinklers. Sprinkler water is often hard and leaves mineral spots that bake on in the sun.
- Under bird roosts, power lines or light poles in parking lots.
- Beside construction or a gravel lot where dust settles on the car every day.
- In full afternoon sun when shade is available. Heat speeds every kind of spotting and etching.
Also skip
Other things to put off for two weeks
- Car covers on an outdoor car. A cover can rub dust into the surface as it moves in the wind.
- Stickers, magnets, tape or temporary tags stuck directly to coated paint.
- Clay bars, polishes or any abrasive product.
- Strong bug and tar removers, unless needed for something that would cause damage if left; then use a coating-safe product and rinse thoroughly.
- Waterless washes. With no rinse, every wipe drags whatever dust is on the surface.
What is fine
Things you do not need to worry about
- Driving in light rain
- Once past the first air-dry hours, rain will not wash a coating off. Blot the car dry when you get home to prevent mineral spots.
- Normal driving and parking in a garage
- Drive the car. A garage is the ideal place for it during the cure.
- A plain-water rinse
- IGL says normal water is fine if the car needs cleaning during the cure. Rinse gently and dry with clean microfiber. Ceramic coating cure time explained
- Light dust
- Leave it or rinse it off. Do not wipe dry dust off a fresh coating with a towel.
| When | What is going on | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| First hours | Initial cure; IGL lists about 1 to 4 hours away from water depending on product | Usually happens at the shop before pickup |
| Days 1 to 5 | Full cure (IGL: 3 to 5 days) | No soap, no chemicals; plain-water rinse only if needed; blot spots |
| Days 6 to 14 | Coating cured, still a sensible margin period | First gentle pH-neutral hand wash; no automatic washes or added products without approval |
| After 2 weeks | Normal care | Regular hand washes, prompt removal of droppings, toppers as your installer recommends |

Planning a coating?
We hand you care instructions at pickup and explain what to do in the first weeks. Coating requires at least a Level 2 detail and a corrected or enhanced finish first.
Common questions
What happens if it rains right after a ceramic coating?
If the coating has had its initial air-dry time, usually a few hours, rain will not wash it away. The main risk is mineral spots as the rain dries, which are easier to remove from a fresh coating if you deal with them quickly. Blot the car with a clean microfiber towel or rinse it with clean water and dry it once the rain stops.
Can I drive my car right after a ceramic coating?
Yes, once the installer releases it. The first hours of curing normally happen at the shop. After that, normal driving is fine. Try to avoid gravel roads, construction zones and long highway trips covered in bugs for the first days if you can, and deal with any droppings or splatter promptly and gently.
Why does my installer say two weeks when IGL says 3 to 5 days?
IGL's 3 to 5 days is the full cure under typical conditions. Installers often add a margin because temperature and humidity vary, and because the cost of a mistake on a fresh coating is high. Two weeks before automatic washes, toppers and heavier chemicals is a cautious rule. Follow your installer's instructions, since they know the conditions the coating cured in.
Will a water spot on a new coating come off?
Usually yes, if you act quickly. Fresh mineral spots sit on top of the coating and often come off with a gentle rinse and blot, or a coating-safe spot remover once the coating has cured. Spots left to bake for weeks can etch, which needs polishing. If a spot will not come off, ask your installer before trying stronger products.
