Ceramic Coating & PPF Guide: Get It Done
Ceramic Coating Aftercare: Your First 30 Days
The first month decides a lot about how a ceramic coating performs for the rest of its life. The coating is still finishing its cure in the first days, and the habits you set in the first few washes are the ones that either preserve it or slowly wear it down.
This is a calendar, not a list of rules. It tells you what to do and what to skip on each stretch of days after pickup, using IGL's published instructions for its coatings and the care instructions we give at pickup. If your sheet from us says something different for your product, follow the sheet.
The short answer
For the first 30 days after a ceramic coating: keep the car dry for the first hours, avoid washing with any shampoo or cleaner while the coating cures (IGL lists 3 to 5 days for Kenzo), and rinse droppings or sap off promptly with plain water. From the second week, hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and dry with clean microfiber. Avoid brush car washes entirely.
Key points
- IGL's Kenzo data sheet says to keep the coated surface away from water for about 4 hours and lists a full cure in 3 to 5 days.
- During the cure, avoid harsh shampoos, all-purpose cleaners and anything caustic; plain water is fine for a rinse.
- Bird droppings, bugs and sap should come off soon, even during the cure, with water and a soft touch.
- Your first full wash sets the routine: pH-neutral shampoo, clean mitts, clean microfiber, no brushes.
- By the end of the month, the car should bead and sheet water strongly and stay cleaner between washes.
Day 0
Pickup day
Pickup is the time to ask questions while the car is in front of you. Find out which product went on each surface: paint, wheels, glass, trim. Each can have its own care. Take the care instructions home and keep them with the car's papers.
Drive home normally. A coating that has passed its initial dry period does not need to be babied on the road. The more important thing is what happens when you park: indoors or in shade if you can, and away from sprinklers and trees that drip sap.
- Look the car over in daylight before you leave, and point out anything that looks smeared or uneven.
- Ask how long your specific product should stay dry, and confirm the care sheet covers glass or wheel coatings if you added them.
- Ask about our monthly maintenance program if you would rather not wash it yourself.
Days 1 to 5
The cure window: leave it alone
A coating feels dry long before it finishes curing. IGL's data sheet for Kenzo, our 5-year coating, says it fully cures in 3 to 5 days, and that during this period the surface should not be washed with harsh shampoos, all-purpose cleaners or anything containing caustic soda, because they damage the hydrophobic properties. If the car needs it, plain water is fine. Our 3-year and 1-year products follow their own instructions, which is why your care sheet is the final word.
Rain during this stretch is not a disaster. The bigger risk is water drying on the paint in the sun, which leaves mineral spots. If rain or a sprinkler hits the car, rinse it gently with plain water in the shade if you can and blot it dry with a clean, soft microfiber towel. Do not reach for a quick detailer or any cleaner yet.
- Do
- Park in a garage or shade. Rinse off spots with plain water and blot dry. Leave it dirty rather than scrub it.
- Don't
- Use soap, all-purpose cleaner, bug sprays or wax. Take it through any car wash. Cover it with a car cover that might rub fresh coating.
- Watch for
- Bird droppings, tree sap and bug splatter. Soften them with water and lift them off; do not let them bake in. How droppings etch paint
Days 6 to 13
First week: easy rinses and quick cleanups
Once the cure window has passed, the coating is doing its job, but nothing about it requires frequent washing. In this stretch, a rinse with plain water takes care of most dust and pollen. Water should already bead tightly and roll off.
Contamination is the main thing to manage. In spring around Anderson, yellow pine pollen coats everything in a day; rinse it off rather than wiping it, because dry-wiping pollen and dust drags grit across the finish. In summer, bugs on the front bumper and mirrors come off easily from a coated surface if you get to them within a day or so. A soaked microfiber laid over the area for a few minutes softens them first.
Days 14 to 21
The first real wash
Sometime in the second or third week, give the car its first full hand wash. This is the one to get right, because it is the template for every wash after. Wash in the shade, on a cool surface, early or late in the day during an Upstate summer.
Use a pH-neutral car shampoo. IGL's Kenzo data sheet says to clean coated surfaces with cleaners in the pH 3 to 9 range and notes that strong acids or alkalis are unnecessary, since neutral cleaners are generally enough for coated vehicles. That rules out dish soap and most heavy-duty degreasers.
Rinse
Rinse the whole car thoroughly to float off loose grit before anything touches the paint.
Wheels first
Clean wheels and tires with separate tools so brake dust never reaches your paint mitt.
Two buckets
One bucket of shampoo, one of plain water to rinse the mitt. Work top down, panel by panel.
Rinse again
Rinse each section before shampoo dries, especially in heat.
Dry gently
Use a clean, plush microfiber towel or a blower. Blot or drag lightly; do not scrub.
Days 22 to 30
Settle into the routine
By the end of the month you should know how your car behaves. Water should bead and sheet off quickly. Dirt should come off with less effort than before, and the car should stay cleaner between washes. If something feels off, such as water clinging flat to a panel or a spot that looks hazy, call us rather than trying to fix it with a polish.
Set a washing rhythm that fits your driving. A commuter on I-85 every day may want a wash every week or two; a weekend car might go longer. Our maintenance plan article covers wash cadence, toppers and the annual check in more depth.
Avoid all month
Things that wear a new coating early
- Automatic brush or cloth washes. The brushes are abrasive and the soaps can be strong.
- Dish soap, household cleaners and degreasers. They are outside the pH range coatings like.
- Wiping dry dust or pollen off with a towel or duster.
- Letting bird droppings, bugs or sap sit for days, especially in summer heat.
- Washing in direct sun, where water and shampoo dry on the paint.
- Waxes or polishes with abrasives. They can cover or remove what you just paid for.
- Parking under sprinklers. Hard water spots dry on fast in the heat.
Glass and wheels
If you added a glass or wheel coating
A glass coating changes how your windshield works in rain: water beads and runs off, and at highway speeds you may need the wipers less. IGL says its Ecocoat Window coating reduces the frequency of wiper use and resists water spots. Clean the glass with a gentle glass cleaner, keep the wiper blades clean, and do not use abrasive glass polishes on it. Our glass coating lasts about 20,000 miles.
Coated wheels shed brake dust more easily, but they still need regular cleaning; the coating makes that easier, not unnecessary. Use a pH-balanced wheel cleaner rather than strong acid cleaners, and let wheels cool before you wash them.
| When | Do | Skip |

Common questions
Can I drive my car in the rain right after a ceramic coating?
Once the initial dry period has passed, driving in rain is generally fine. IGL's Kenzo instructions call for keeping the surface away from water for about 4 hours after application. If rain leaves spots during the cure days, rinse with plain water and blot dry rather than using any cleaner.
When can I wash my car for the first time after a ceramic coating?
Wait until the cure window has passed before using any shampoo. For Kenzo, IGL lists a full cure in 3 to 5 days and says only plain water should be used before then. Many owners wait until the second or third week for the first full hand wash, rinsing off contamination in between.
Why is my new coating not beading water yet?
IGL notes that the hydrophobic effect shows after initial curing and strengthens over the following hours, depending on surface and temperature. If a panel still does not bead after the first week, a film of dirt or a cleaner residue may be on top. Rinse it, and call us if it persists.
Can I use a car cover during the first month?
Skip it during the cure days, since fabric rubbing on fresh coating is not ideal. After that, a clean, soft, well-fitted cover is fine on a clean car. Never cover a dirty car; wind moves the cover and grinds the dirt into the finish.
Is it OK to use a quick detailer spray on a new coating?
Not during the cure. After that, a spray designed for coated cars is fine for light dust between washes, used with plenty of product and a clean microfiber. Check that it is labeled safe for ceramic coatings. Avoid sprays with waxes or abrasives, which can mask the coating's own water behavior.
