Window Tint Guide: Compare

Jeep Wrangler Window Tint: Hard Top vs Soft Top

A Wrangler is not like other SUVs when it comes to tint. Its doors come off, its top comes off, and depending on which top you run, half its windows may not be glass at all. The question is less "how dark" than "which windows can actually take film."

This guide sorts that out: what you can tint on a hard top, what you cannot on a soft top and why, how removable doors and panels change the job, and how South Carolina's tint law treats a vehicle built for occasional off-road use.

The short answer

On a Jeep Wrangler, window film can go on glass: the roll-up door windows and, on a hard top, the rear quarter windows and back glass. Soft-top windows are flexible vinyl that folds and zips, so film is not applied to them; tinted replacement vinyl windows are the usual route. In South Carolina, the door glass must keep 27% combined, and if the label says MPV, windows behind the driver have no light-transmission minimum.

Key points

  • Window film is made for glass; on a Wrangler that means the door windows and, on a hard top, the quarter windows and back glass.
  • Soft-top side and rear windows are flexible vinyl that rolls, folds and zips, so they are not candidates for film.
  • Wranglers are built for occasional off-road use, which is part of the federal and South Carolina definition of a multipurpose passenger vehicle; confirm on your door-jamb label.
  • On an MPV, South Carolina's light-transmission rule does not apply behind the driver, but the front door glass still needs 27% combined.
  • Removable doors and hard-top panels need careful handling after tinting, and each filmed window still needs its own compliance sticker.

What takes film

Which Wrangler Windows Can Be Tinted

Front door glassfull doors, any top
Full doors with roll-up glass can be tinted like any car's front windows. In South Carolina they must keep at least 27% combined light transmission with the film and glass measured together.
Rear door glass (four-door)full doors
On four-door models with full rear doors, the roll-up glass takes film. These windows are behind the driver, so the MPV rule decides how dark they can go.
Hard-top quarter windows and back glasshard top only
The fixed side windows in the hard top and the rear glass are glass panels that take film normally. The back glass often has defroster lines, which calls for careful work. Tint and defroster lines
Soft-top windowsnot filmed
Flexible vinyl panels that zip in and out and fold with the top. Film is not applied to them; see below for the options.
Windshieldtop strip only
As on any vehicle in South Carolina, film only along the top above the AS1 line, nonreflective and not red, yellow or amber. Windshield sun strips

Soft top

Why Soft-Top Windows Don't Take Film

Automotive window film is applied to the interior surface of glass, as LLumar puts it, and installed by laying it wet onto rigid, smooth glass and squeegeeing it flat. Soft-top windows are different material entirely. Soft-top makers describe them as vinyl, and they are designed to flex, roll up, fold flat with the top and be stored when removed.

A film bonded to a panel that bends and folds would crease, lift and cloud, and getting the adhesive off later could mar the vinyl. That is why tinting a soft top's side and rear windows is not a film job. The usual route is replacement windows or a top made with tinted vinyl: some aftermarket tops are sold with tinted vinyl windows from the factory. Ask the top's maker what fits your model.

Vinyl care

Looking After Soft-Top Windows Instead

Since soft-top windows cannot be protected with film, how you clean them matters. One soft-top maker notes that cleaning the vinyl windows often keeps scratches and swirls at bay, and recommends a dedicated vinyl window cleaner with a microfiber cloth. A Jeep parts retailer's care guide warns that soft-top windows are prone to scratches or breakage if not protected on or off the vehicle, and that automatic car washes can damage the material and windows.

  • Rinse grit off before wiping; dry wiping drags dirt across soft vinyl.
  • Use a cleaner made for vinyl windows and a clean microfiber cloth, not paper towels or household glass cleaner.
  • Store removed windows flat or in a padded window bag so they do not crease or scratch.
  • Skip automatic car washes with a soft top on.

The law

Is a Wrangler an MPV Under South Carolina Law?

South Carolina's statute defines a multipurpose passenger vehicle as one designed to carry ten persons or less that is built either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation. The federal definition is nearly identical. Wranglers have been certified as MPVs: NHTSA's own notices refer to Jeep Wrangler MPVs, and note that Chrysler certified a 2003 Wrangler as an MPV.

Your own vehicle is what counts, so read the certification label on the driver's door edge or pillar. Federal rules require it to state the vehicle type, such as MPV or truck. If it says MPV, South Carolina's light-transmission requirement does not apply to windows behind the driver: rear door glass, hard-top quarter windows and back glass. The front door glass still needs 27% combined, and film everywhere must be nonreflective and not red, yellow or amber.

Jeep's pickup, the Gladiator, is a different case: South Carolina applies the 27% rule to windows behind the driver on pickup trucks.

Removable parts

Doors Off, Top Off: What Changes

Removable doors and hard-top panels are the Wrangler's best feature and the trickiest part of tinting one. Tinted door glass and hard-top panels need gentle handling when they come off: set them on a padded surface, glass side protected, and avoid leaning them against anything that can scratch the film on the inside. Give new film its full curing time before you pull the doors or top for the first time.

South Carolina's certificate of compliance goes on the inside lower right corner of each window with after-factory film. Keep those stickers on the panels when they are stored. If you swap between full doors and half doors, only the full doors' glass will carry film; half-door uppers are often vinyl like a soft top.

Heat

Film Choice for a Jeep

A Wrangler has upright glass and a cabin that sees a lot of sun, especially on lake days around Hartwell with the top panels off and then back on for the drive home. With the front door glass held to 27% combined, the film type matters more than the shade.

LLumar Carbon, from $125.99 for the two front side windows, has its color built into the film so the charcoal shade stays true instead of fading or turning purple. LLumar Ceramic, from $199.99 for the front pair, uses nano-ceramic particles to reject more of the sun's infrared heat, so the cabin stays cooler without needing the darkest shade. Hard-top panels and rear glass are quoted for your Jeep. LLumar rates its films to block up to 99% of UV rays.

Tinting a Wrangler With Us

  1. Tell us your top and doors

Hard top or soft top, full doors or half doors, two-door or four-door. That decides which windows can take film.

  2. Legal check

We check the legal shade for your vehicle before installing, including the door-jamb classification and any factory privacy glass in the hard top.

  3. Computer cut and install

Film is computer cut for your Jeep's glass, with care around the back glass defroster lines.

  4. Stickers and handling

Each tinted window gets the South Carolina certificate of compliance sticker. We do not tint vehicles more than 8 years old, because seals and trim become brittle.

Common questions

Can you tint Jeep soft-top windows?

Not with window film. Soft-top windows are flexible vinyl that rolls, folds and zips, while film is made to bond flat to rigid glass. Film on vinyl would crease and lift. If you want darker soft-top windows, look at replacement windows or a top made with tinted vinyl from the top's maker.

Can I tint the windows in my Wrangler's removable hard top?

Yes. The hard top's quarter windows and back glass are glass and take film normally, with extra care around the rear defroster lines. If your Wrangler's label says MPV, South Carolina sets no light-transmission minimum for those windows behind the driver. The film must still be nonreflective with a compliance sticker on each window.

Do tinted windows survive taking the doors off?

They do if you handle the doors carefully. Let the film cure fully first, then store doors on a padded surface where nothing presses on or scrapes the inside of the glass. Keep the compliance stickers in place on each filmed window while the doors are off the Jeep.

Is a Jeep Gladiator treated like a Wrangler for tint?

No. The Gladiator is a pickup, and South Carolina applies the light-transmission rule to windows behind the driver on pickup trucks. Its rear windows need at least 27% combined with film and glass measured together, the same as its front door glass. Check its label and ask before tinting.
