Window Tint Guide: Get Tinted

Window Tint Aftercare: The First Week and Beyond

Most tint problems people blame on the film start in the first few days after installation: a window rolled down too soon, a hazy patch someone pressed on, a scraper run across the back glass. The film itself is tough once it has dried. It is the drying period, and a few habits after it, that decide how it looks in five years.

Here is what to do in the first week, what is normal and what is not, and how to keep tinted glass looking clean without scratching it. Follow the specific instructions you get at pickup first; this guide fills in the reasons.

The short answer

After window tint, keep the tinted windows rolled up until the film has dried, often a few days but longer in cool, damp weather. Leave haze and small water pockets alone, since they clear as moisture evaporates. Do not clean the inside of the glass during that period. Afterward, clean with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner, and keep seat belt buckles, rings and scrapers off the film.

Key points

  • Keep tinted windows up until the film has dried; drying time depends on temperature and humidity.
  • Haze, cloudiness and small water pockets in the first days are normal and clear on their own.
  • Wait to clean the inside of the glass; then use a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner.
  • Most long-term damage is mechanical: seat belt buckles, rings, pet claws, cargo and ice scrapers.
  • Keep the compliance stickers in place and call your installer if a problem lasts beyond the cure period.

Days 1 to 3

Why the windows have to stay up

Window film is installed wet. A slip solution lets the installer position the film, and most of it is squeegeed out, but a thin layer of moisture remains while the adhesive bonds to the glass. Until it dries, the bottom edge of the film on a roll-down window is the weak point. Lowering the window drags that edge past the door's rubber seal and can catch, lift or crease it.

How long to wait depends on the weather. The International Window Film Association says drying time varies with temperature and humidity, so a hot, dry July afternoon in Anderson speeds things up and a cool, wet week in winter slows them down. Use the time your installer gives you for your film and season, and if in doubt, wait an extra day.

Put a note on the window switches if someone else drives the car. Child locks on the rear windows help too. If you hit a drive-through, a parking gate or a toll booth during those days, open the door instead of the window, or use an untinted window if you have one. Some cars also lower the windows slightly when a frameless door opens; ask your installer whether that applies to your vehicle.

What is normal

Haze, bubbles and streaks in the first days

Overall haze or cloudinessNormal
Moisture still drying under the film. Solar Gard's care guidance describes this haziness as normal and says it disappears in a few days depending on weather. It clears faster in sun and warmth.
Small water pockets or blistersNormal, usually
Little pockets of trapped solution that shrink and vanish as the film dries. Do not push them toward the edge; you can crease the film.
A speck with a halo around itNot moisture
A particle of dust or hair trapped under the film. It will not dry out. Mention it to your installer if it bothers you.
Lifting corner or edgeCall
An edge that peels back, especially at the top of a roll-down window, needs attention before dirt gets under it. Which bubbles are normal

First week

Hands off the inside of the glass

  • Do not clean, wipe or apply anything to the inside of tinted windows until the film has dried.
  • Do not stick anything to the film: suction mounts, decals, parking passes or tape.
  • Do not use the rear defroster to speed up drying unless your installer says it is fine for your film.
  • Park in the sun if you can. Warmth helps moisture leave the film.
  • Exterior washing is fine, since the film is on the inside, but avoid aiming a pressure washer at the window seals.

Cleaning

How to clean tinted windows for years

Once the film has dried, cleaning is simple. LLumar says its window tint is scratch-resistant, needs no special products and can be cleaned with a household cleaner and non-abrasive paper towels or cotton cloths. The International Window Film Association gives similar advice: a soft cloth or synthetic sponge, any normal glass cleaner without abrasives, and a soft cloth or squeegee to dry.

Care instructions vary by manufacturer, so follow the sheet for your film if it says otherwise. Whatever you use, spray the cloth rather than the glass near the door seals, wipe gently and use a clean microfiber for the final pass. Never use razor blades, scouring pads or the rough side of a sponge on the inside of tinted glass.

  1. Dust first

Wipe loose dust off with a dry microfiber so you do not drag grit across the film.

  2. Clean

Use a soft cloth dampened with a non-abrasive cleaner, working top to bottom.

  3. Dry

Finish with a clean, dry microfiber or a soft squeegee.

  4. Edges

Go gently along the top edge of roll-down windows, where film meets the seal.

Daily habits

What actually damages tint

Film on quality glass rarely fails from age in the first years. It fails from contact. The most common culprit is the seat belt: when the belt retracts quickly, the metal buckle swings into the rear side window or the B-pillar glass. Guide it back by hand.

Rings and watches scrape when you reach across to close a door from the inside. Dogs scratch rear side windows with their claws when they get excited. Ladders, lumber and luggage scrape the inside of back glass and SUV quarter windows. None of these will damage the glass, but film is a thin layer of polyester, and a deep scratch cannot be polished out or patched.

In winter, never use an ice scraper on the inside of tinted glass. Clear interior fog with the defroster and air conditioning instead.

Long term

Stickers, warranty and when to call

Leave the certificate of compliance sticker in the lower right corner of each tinted window. South Carolina requires it on every window with after-factory film, and it shows the light transmission, the installer and the installation date.

LLumar says all its tint products carry a manufacturer's lifetime limited warranty, with restrictions, and that the dealer has the warranty details. Keep your receipt and any warranty paperwork with the car's records. If you see bubbling that appears after the film has fully dried, peeling, or discoloration, contact your installer rather than trying a fix yourself.

Questions after your tint appointment?

If something does not look right once the film has had time to dry, call us. We would rather look at it early.

Common questions

What happens if I roll my windows down too soon after tint?

The bottom edge of the film can catch on the door's rubber seal and lift, crease or peel before the adhesive has bonded. Sometimes nothing happens, but if the edge does lift, dirt gets underneath and it rarely lies flat again. Roll the window back up, leave it alone and call your installer.

Can I wash my car after getting it tinted?

Yes. Automotive film is applied to the inside of the glass, so an exterior hand wash does not touch it. Keep the windows closed, avoid blasting the window seals with a pressure washer during the first days, and do not clean the inside of the tinted glass until the film has dried.

Is it safe to use the rear defroster on new tint?

Once the film has dried, normal defroster use is fine; the film sits over the grid and is designed for it. During the first days, follow your installer's advice for your film. Never scrape the inside of the back glass, since a blade can cut both the film and the defroster lines.

How long does window tint haze last?

Haze from leftover moisture usually clears within days, but it depends on temperature, humidity, film type and how much sun the car gets. Cool, damp weather can stretch it out. If the haze is unchanged well after the cure period your installer gave you, have it looked at.

Can I put stickers or a phone mount on tinted windows?

It is best not to. Adhesive decals and suction cups can pull at the film or leave marks when removed, and anything stuck on during the first days can disturb film that is still drying. Use a dash or vent mount instead, and put parking passes on untinted glass where allowed.
