Ceramic Coating & PPF Guide: Compare
Tesla Paint Protection: PPF and Ceramic Coating Options
Teslas are some of the most common cars we are asked about, and the questions are specific: is the paint soft, will film interfere with the cameras, can the windshield be coated, and what does Tesla itself allow? The best place to start is Tesla's owner's manual, which is more detailed about cleaning than most.
This guide pulls together what the manual says, then maps out where paint protection film and ceramic coating make sense on a Model 3 or Model Y in the Upstate.
The short answer
Most Tesla owners do best with clear PPF on the front bumper, hood and mirrors, plus a ceramic coating on the rest of the paint and over the film. Tesla's manual calls for hand washing with a mild car shampoo, touchless automatic washes only, and at least 12 inches between a pressure washer nozzle and the car. It also says to apply hydrophobic glass coatings only to the side and rear windows, not the windshield.
Key points
- Tesla's manual favors hand washing with a soft microfiber cloth and mild shampoo, and touchless washes only.
- It warns against highly alkaline, caustic or acidic cleaners and anything above pH 13.
- Hydrophobic glass coatings belong on side and rear windows only, per Tesla, because of the windshield cameras.
- PPF on the nose and a coating on everything else is the usual plan for highway-driven Teslas.
- Claims that Tesla paint is unusually soft are common, but we judge each car's paint at inspection rather than assume.

What Tesla Says About Washing
Tesla's Model Y owner's manual (2020 to 2024 vehicles) lays out a careful routine. Rinse grime and grit off with a hose first, flush mud from wheel wells and panel seams, then hand wash using a clean soft cloth, cold or lukewarm water and a mild, high-quality car shampoo. Rinse with clean water so soap does not dry on the surface, and dry thoroughly. Tesla also says not to wash in direct sunlight.
The manual's cautions are worth reading closely. It warns against hot water, detergents, highly alkaline or caustic ingredients (especially those containing hydroxide), solvents, acidic products and soaps above pH 13. It says to use only touchless automatic washes, to put the car in Car Wash Mode, and to keep a pressure washer nozzle at least 12 inches (30 cm) from the surface while keeping it moving. It even advises against tight-napped or rough cloths such as wash mitts, recommending a high-quality microfiber cloth instead. Damage from car washes or improper washing is not covered by Tesla's warranty.
Glass
The Windshield Coating Question
This is the most important Tesla-specific point in this guide. Tesla's manual says that if you add a hydrophobic coating to the windows, apply it only to the side and rear windows, not the front windshield, because doing so may affect the visibility of the Autopilot cameras. It also says not to use windshield treatment fluids, which can interfere with wiper friction and cause chattering.
So on a Tesla, the sensible plan is to follow the manufacturer: a glass coating such as IGL Ecocoat Window on the side and rear glass, and an uncoated windshield. If you are pricing glass coating for a Tesla, ask about all windows except the windshield rather than the windshield-only option.
Paint care
Polishing, Chips and Touch-Up
Tesla allows occasional treatment with an approved polish containing a very mild abrasive, filling compounds and wax. It cautions against cutting pastes, color restoration compounds and polishes containing harsh abrasives, which it says can scour the surface and damage the paint. That is consumer guidance, and it is a good reason to leave machine correction to someone who measures and tests before cutting.
For chips, Tesla suggests its touch-up pen, applied after washing and before polishing or waxing. If you plan on film, touch up existing chips first; film seals over a repaired chip but cannot fill one.
Soft paint?
Is Tesla Paint Really Softer?
You will read plenty of owner reports that Tesla paint scratches or chips easily. We have not found a published, independent measurement that settles the question, so we do not repeat it as fact. Paint behavior varies by color, model year and how the car has been washed.
What matters for you is the condition of your car's paint today. At inspection we look at it in strong light and show you what can and cannot be removed. Swirls from automatic washes or rough towels are common on any daily driver, Tesla or not.
Where to protect
Film and Coating Zones on a Model 3 or Model Y
- Front bumper and hoodFilm
- With no grille opening, the smooth Tesla nose takes stone hits across its whole face. Film on the bumper and hood is the single most useful protection for highway drivers. Partial vs full hood film
- Mirrors, headlights and fendersFilm
- Mirror faces and headlights collect chips and bug splatter. Fenders take spray from the front tires. These are included in most front-end film packages.
- Rockers and rear quartersFilm, optional
- Low, wide Teslas throw road debris along the lower doors and rear quarters. Worth adding if you drive gravel roads or see chips there already. Rocker panel PPF
- Remaining paint and the filmCeramic coating
- A coating over the rest of the car and over the film makes washing easier and keeps water spotting down. It does not stop chips or scratches. PPF and coating together
- Side and rear glassGlass coating
- Hydrophobic glass coating helps rain clear from side windows and the rear glass. Per Tesla's manual, skip the windshield. How glass coating works
Cameras
Film and Sensors: What a Good Install Looks Like
- Camera lenses, parking sensors (if equipped) and the front camera area stay clear of film. Ask how the installer handles each cutout.
- Film edges should not sit across a sensor face or bunch near a camera housing.
- After install, check that Autopilot cameras and park assist work normally before you leave.
- Tesla says to clean camera lenses with water and a microfiber cloth (on newer builds), without chemical or abrasive cleaners. Coated or filmed panels nearby do not change that.
Care plan
Washing a Protected Tesla
Wait after install
LLumar recommends not washing new film for three days. Coatings have their own cure window; follow the instructions you get at pickup.
Rinse, then hand wash
Rinse grit off first, then wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and a clean microfiber cloth, working top to bottom. Keep out of direct sun.
Keep the pressure washer back
Tesla says at least 12 inches; around film edges, more distance and a shallow angle are safer. LLumar notes pressure washing can lift film edges.
Handle droppings and tar fast
Tesla tells owners to remove bird droppings, tree resin, insects and tar immediately rather than waiting for the next wash. In summer heat that advice matters even more.

Common questions
Can I put a ceramic coating on my Tesla windshield?
Tesla's Model Y manual says to apply hydrophobic window coatings only to the side and rear windows, not the front windshield, because it may affect the visibility of the Autopilot cameras. Tesla also says it is not responsible for damage from window treatments. Our advice is to follow that guidance and leave the windshield uncoated.
Can I take my Tesla through an automatic car wash?
Tesla's manual says to use touchless automatic washes only, with the car locked and in Car Wash Mode, which closes windows, locks the charge port and disables the wipers. Brush washes can damage parts and paint, and Tesla's warranty does not cover car wash damage. Hand washing is still the gentlest option.
Does PPF affect Tesla Autopilot or parking sensors?
Film should not cover camera lenses or sensor faces. A careful installer cuts around them so the film edge sits clear. After any install, check that the cameras and park assist work normally before leaving. If something seems off, the installer should inspect the film around that sensor.
Should I coat my Tesla's glass roof?
Tesla's manual addresses window coatings for the side and rear glass and warns against abrasive cleaners on glass. A hydrophobic coating on the roof glass mostly helps rain and pollen rinse off. Ask us to look at your model's roof before deciding, since roof glass varies by model and year.
