Ceramic Coating & PPF Guide: Compare
Protecting a Family SUV Inside and Out
A family SUV gets used, not admired. Strollers get dragged over the rear bumper, kids open doors into parking lot poles, the dog climbs in with muddy paws, and someone always finds a juice box under the third row a week too late.
Protecting it means thinking about the inside as much as the paint. This guide goes area by area, from the roof to the cargo floor, and shows what each type of protection actually helps with and what it costs on a bigger vehicle.
The short answer
Protect a family SUV in layers: a ceramic coating on the paint so a big vehicle is quicker to wash, film on high-wear spots like door edges and the front end, and attention to the interior, where spills, sunscreen and pet claws do the most damage. Interior detailing, steam extraction and an interior coating on leather keep cabins easier to clean. Prices rise with size, so check your SUV's class.
Key points
- Bigger vehicles cost more to detail and coat; know whether yours prices as an SUV, 7-seat SUV or SUV XL.
- A coating's biggest benefit on a tall SUV is faster, gentler washing of a roof and hood you can barely reach.
- Door edges, the rear bumper loading area and the front end take the most family-life scuffs and chips.
- Kia's owner's manual warns that sunscreen, hand cleaner, perfume and air freshener can damage or discolor interior parts.
- In one study of 29 cars, side windows blocked an average of 71 percent of UVA light versus 96 percent for windshields.
Outside
Where a Family SUV's Paint Takes Damage
- Front bumper, hood and mirrors: highway rock chips, same as any car, with a bigger hood to catch them.
- Door edges: kids swinging doors open in tight parking lots and school pickup lines.
- Door handle cups: rings and fingernails scratching the paint around handles.
- Rear bumper top and hatch lip: strollers, sports bags, groceries and dog crates sliding across.
- Roof: pine pollen, sap and bird droppings that sit unseen because nobody can see up there.
- Lower doors and rockers: red clay and gravel from ball fields, church lots and lake roads.
Paint options
Coating, Film or Both on a Big SUV
- Ceramic coatingEasier washing
- On a tall SUV, the coating's value is time. Dirt and pollen rinse off more easily, so the roof and hood take less scrubbing from a step stool. It does not stop chips or scratches. Level 2 Detail is the minimum prep, and paint must be corrected or enhanced first. Washing a coated car
- Front-end filmChip protection
- Our Interstate package (front half of hood and fenders, front bumper, mirrors) starts at $1,199.99 in LLumar Platinum PPF. Long Distance Driver, from $2,199.99, adds the full hood and fenders, headlights, fog lights and door edges, which also helps with door-edge chips. PPF coverage options
- Spot film for family wearAsk us
- Film on the rear bumper loading area or door handle cups targets the scuffs that come from daily family use. These areas aren't part of a published package; ask us what's possible on your SUV.
- Glass coatingAll windows $250 to $350
- IGL Ecocoat Window on all the glass helps rain bead off and makes bug and grime cleanup easier. The windshield alone is $100. It lasts about 20,000 miles. Glass coating explained
Inside
The Interior Is Where Families Do the Damage
Most family SUVs look worse inside than out long before the paint shows its age. Spilled milk and juice soak into fabric, crumbs grind into carpet, and car seats press into leather for years. Pets add hair, drool on windows and claw marks on door panels and the cargo area.
One less obvious culprit is personal care products. Kia's owner's manual warns that sunscreen, cosmetic oil, hand cleaner, perfume and air freshener can damage or discolor interior parts, and tells owners to wipe them off immediately. For leather, it recommends neutral cleaners or low-alcohol solutions, warning that high-alcohol or acid and alkaline cleaners can fade color or strip the surface. After a day at Lake Hartwell with sunscreened kids, a quick wipe of the armrests and door pulls is worth it.
Leather coating is available for seats; ask for a price. It adds a protective layer that helps spills and dye transfer wipe off more easily. It doesn't make leather indestructible, and it still needs gentle, appropriate cleaners.
Pets
Riding With Dogs Without Wrecking the Cabin
- Use a washable cargo liner or hammock-style seat cover; it's far easier to clean than carpet or seat fabric.
- Wipe muddy paws before the dog jumps in, especially after red clay trails and lake days.
- Expect claw marks on door panels and the rear bumper lip; a bumper mat for loading and a ramp for older dogs reduce both.
- Vacuum hair before it works into fabric weave; a rubber pet-hair brush lifts what the vacuum leaves behind.
- Clean nose prints and drool from inside glass with a glass cleaner safe for tinted windows if the car has tint.
- For odors and accidents that have soaked in, steam extraction reaches deeper than surface cleaning.
Sun
Sun Through the Side Windows
Windshields and side windows aren't equal. In a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology, front windshields blocked an average of 96 percent of UVA light, while side windows blocked an average of 71 percent, and only 4 of the 29 cars tested blocked more than 90 percent at the side windows.
That matters for children in the second and third rows and for the interior surfaces beside them. Upstate summers mean long, bright days in parking lots and on the road. Window tint is one way to add a layer at the side glass; see our window tinting page for film options. Parking in shade and using a windshield sunshade help too.
Routine
A Realistic Care Routine for a Family SUV
Keep a cleanup kit in the cargo area
Microfiber towels, an interior cleaner safe for your surfaces, and a small trash bag. Most stains are easy in the first hour and hard after a week.
Vacuum weekly, especially under car seats
Crumbs and sand under car seats grind into carpet and leather. Lift the seats out when you can.
Hand wash every couple of weeks
Use a step stool for the roof, rinse thoroughly first, and use two buckets. A coated SUV makes this much faster.
Protect the cargo area
A cargo liner and a bumper protector mat for loading save both the carpet and the rear bumper paint.
Schedule a deep interior clean
Our Interior Micro Detail is $149.99 on its own (from $129.99 added to a package), and steam extraction starts at $99.99 for soaked-in stains. Headliners get spot cleaning only.
Pricing
What Size Class Means for Price
Detailing and coating prices step up with size. Our Level 1 Detail starts at $199.99 for an SUV and $219.99 for a large truck, 3rd-row SUV or van; Level 2, the minimum before a coating, starts at $299.99 and $329.99. Coating prices by class are in the table below. Final prices are confirmed after inspection.
If you're weighing coating lengths for a family vehicle, think about how long the SUV stays in the family. A 3-year coating covers a typical stretch of school years and car seats; a 5-year coating suits an SUV you plan to keep until the kids drive.
| SUV class | 5-year IGL Kenzo | 3-year IGL Quartz+ | 1-year IGL EZ |

Common questions
Is a ceramic coating worth it on a family SUV?
Often, because the main benefit is time. A coated SUV rinses clean more easily, which matters when the roof is out of reach and weekends are busy. A coating won't stop door dings, chips or cargo scuffs. If you'll keep the SUV several years and wash it by hand, it usually earns its cost.
Does a leather coating help with car seats and kids?
It helps with spills, crumbs and dye transfer from clothing, because a coated surface releases them more easily. It won't prevent indentations from a car seat base or scuffs from shoes. Leather coating is available; ask us for a price. Use a seat protector under car seats as well.
How do I get sunscreen marks off my car's interior?
Wipe them as soon as you can with a cleaner made for that surface, and test it on a hidden area first. Kia's manual suggests warm water with a mild non-detergent cleaner for interior parts and warns that sunscreen can cause discoloration. For leather, use a neutral, low-alcohol cleaner. Set-in marks may need a professional interior detail.
What's the best way to protect the rear bumper from loading scuffs?
Start with a simple bumper protector mat that folds out of the cargo area when you load. For more permanent protection, clear film on the bumper top is an option; it isn't part of our published packages, so ask us about it. A coating makes the bumper easier to clean but doesn't stop scuffs.
