Ceramic Coating & PPF Guide: Compare

How Much Does PPF Cost? What Drives the Price

Paint protection film is priced very differently from a coating. You're paying for material by the panel and for skilled hand labor on every curve, edge and sensor cutout, so the same film can cost very different amounts on two cars.

Once you understand what goes into a quote, it's much easier to compare offers and decide how much coverage you actually need. Here are the factors that matter, with our own package prices as real examples.

The short answer

PPF cost depends mostly on how much of the car you cover, then on the vehicle's shape and complexity, the film type (gloss, matte, black or extra-thick), the paint prep needed, and the installer's edge work. At our shop, LLumar Platinum PPF packages start at $1,199.99 for partial front coverage, $2,199.99 for a full front, and $5,499.99 for the full car, with final prices confirmed before install.

Key points

  • Coverage is the biggest lever: partial front, full front, front plus rockers and full car are very different jobs.
  • Bumpers with sensors, vents and tight curves take longer than flat panels, so vehicle shape changes the price.
  • Specialty films such as matte, black and extra-thick change the material and the labor.
  • Film seals in whatever is underneath it, so heavily swirled paint may need correction first.
  • LLumar backs its Platinum films with a 10-year manufacturer's limited warranty, with restrictions set by LLumar.

Factor 1

How Much of the Car You Cover

Film is installed panel by panel, so more panels means more film and more hours. Most people start with the areas that take rock chips, then decide whether the rest of the car needs it. Here's how our LLumar Platinum PPF packages map coverage to price.

InterstateFrom $1,199.99
Front half of the hood, front half of the fenders, front bumper and mirrors. The most-hit areas for the least money; the film edge sits across the hood. Partial vs full hood
Long Distance DriverFrom $2,199.99
Full hood, full fenders, headlights, fog lights, mirrors and door edges. No line across the hood and more coverage for high-mileage drivers. Coverage options
Off RoaderCall for a quote
Full hood, full fenders, headlights, fog lights, mirrors, plus front and rear rocker panels for gravel roads and tire spray. Rocker panel PPF
Full CarFrom $5,499.99
Whole-vehicle coverage, with the exact panels confirmed at inspection. Is full car PPF worth it?

Factor 2

Your Vehicle's Shape and Size

Two cars with the same coverage can take very different amounts of work. A modern front bumper may have parking sensors, camera openings, headlight washers, grille inserts and deep vents, each needing careful cuts and stretching. A truck hood is simply bigger than a compact car's. A sports car's low nose and sculpted fenders need more stretching and relief work than a flat-fronted SUV.

That's why published PPF prices are starting points. The installer has to see the car, check for complex areas and confirm the exact panels before giving a final number.

Factor 3

Which Film You Choose

GlossMost common
LLumar Platinum Gloss is clear with a high-shine top coat that self-heals light swirls with heat and uses a water-repellent, stain-resistant top coat. How self-healing works
MatteSatin look or factory matte
LLumar Platinum Matte gives a flat finish and can turn gloss paint satin or protect factory matte paint. Gloss vs matte PPF
BlackColor plus protection
Black film is used on roofs, pillars, mirrors and trim for a blacked-out look with film's protection. Black and colored PPF
Extra-thickHigh-impact areas
LLumar calls Platinum Extra its thickest PPF, built for gravel roads and track use. More material, and thicker film takes more effort to form around curves. Extra-thick PPF

We install all four versions. Prices for specialty films depend on coverage; ask for a quote.

Factor 4

Paint Prep Before Film

Film is clear, so it shows the paint underneath, including swirls, water spots and scratches. Covering defects seals them under the film for as long as it stays on. At minimum, the paint needs a thorough wash and decontamination. If it has visible swirls or scratches in the areas being covered, a 1-Step Correction (from $799.99) or 2-Step Correction (from $1,399.99) may be worth doing first.

Wax and coatings come off before film goes on. LLumar says waxes and coatings can interfere with the film's adhesion, so it doesn't recommend applying them before installation. If you want a coating, it goes on top of the film afterward.

Repaired paint is a special case. LLumar states its film is designed for original paint, that issues with aftermarket and repaired paint aren't covered by its warranty, and that 30 days is a common wait for fresh paint to outgas before film.

Factor 5

Installation Quality You Can't See in the Quote

The cheapest film job is rarely the cheapest over time. Edge work is where the labor goes: wrapping film around panel edges where it's practical, placing seams and relief cuts where they're least visible, and post-heating edges so they stay down. Rushed installs show as lifted edges, visible seams, trapped dirt and stretch marks.

Ask any installer how they handle edges on your car, whether they use pre-cut patterns or hand-trim bulk film for certain panels, and how they protect the paint while trimming. As authorized LLumar installers, we're happy to walk you through how a specific panel will be done before you commit.

Comparing quotes

How to Compare Two PPF Quotes Fairly

  1. Line up the panels

Write down exactly which panels each quote covers, and whether hoods and fenders are full or partial. A cheaper quote often covers less.

  2. Confirm the film by name

Ask for the manufacturer and product line, then read that manufacturer's own page and warranty terms rather than relying on a summary.

  3. Ask about edges and seams

Which edges are wrapped, where seams will fall on your car, and how sensors and emblems are handled.

  4. Ask what prep is included

Wash and decontamination at minimum. If your paint has swirls, ask whether correction is recommended on the covered panels and what it adds.

  5. Get the paperwork

Care instructions, warranty registration details and an itemized invoice protect you if a film problem ever needs a warranty claim.

After install

Ongoing Costs to Plan For

  • Washing: LLumar recommends waiting three days (72 hours) before the first wash, then hand washing; it discourages pressure washing and automatic washes, which can lift edges.
  • Proper care, per LLumar, includes frequent hand washing, prompt removal of bird droppings and other staining hazards, and only non-abrasive waxes.
  • Optional coating on top: IGL lists its Kenzo, Quartz+ and EZ coatings as safe for PPF, making film easier to clean.
  • Repairs: a deep cut or damaged section of film can be replaced on that panel instead of repainting.
  • Warranty: LLumar's 10-year limited warranty on Platinum films has restrictions; read LLumar's document and keep your install paperwork.

Common questions

Why does full car PPF cost so much more than a front package?

Because it is several times the film and several times the labor. Every door, quarter panel, roof, pillar and bumper needs its own careful fit, edge wrap and post-heat, and full coverage often means more complex panels like rear bumpers and door handles. Front packages cover the panels that take most chips, which is why most people start there.

Can I get PPF on just my front bumper?

Single-panel coverage is possible, but it isn't one of our published packages, so ask us for a quote. Keep in mind that chips also land on the hood leading edge and mirrors. Covering only the bumper can leave the next most-hit areas unprotected, which is why front packages include them.

Is PPF cheaper than repainting a chipped front end?

It depends on the car and the paint shop, and refinishing costs vary widely. The bigger difference is that film keeps factory paint original, while a repaint replaces it. If you keep a car for several years and drive a lot of highway miles, film on the front end usually avoids the chips that would lead to touch-up or refinishing.

Should I add a ceramic coating on top of new PPF?

Many owners do. A coating makes film slicker and easier to wash, and IGL lists its coatings as safe for PPF. It adds cost, so it makes most sense on cars you wash by hand and plan to keep. Wait until the film has settled; your installer will tell you when.
